“It will not be a bicycle for lazy people,” stresses Valentin Vodev, co-founder of the Austrian folding bike producer VELLO. “But if you need it or if you do not want to sweat you can have support.” The member company of CycleCompetence Austria wants to bring the first self-recharging folding bike onto the market using a crowd funding campaign via the platform Kickstarter.
VELLO Bike+ provides the necessary support, if needed: Energy is diverted into the motor while breaking and riding downhill. Different levels of support can be adjusted via smartphone and Bluetooth.
The system comprised of motor, battery and electronics is integrated into the rear hub and generates 250 Watts. “The VELLO Bike+ can still be customized individually despite the integrated system; for example disc breaks or derailleur gears can be added,” explains Valerie Wolff, who runs VELLO together with Valentin Vodev. Even with the electronic motor “you almost do not see that it is an e-bike and in total it only weighs 12 kilos,”he explains.
Kickstarter offer for “early birds”
The Kickstarter campaign is online until 9th November 2016: ks.vello.bike. There you will also find detailed information on the project. VELLO will be offering a limited number of e-bikes for “early birds”at a much lower price.
VELLO is also constantly refining the other folding bike models for which it had been awarded the Red Dot Design Award in 2015: “At our product presentations and from the users of VELLO we are often getting feedback on the folding bike which we then implement into the new models,” says Valerie Wolff.
