Cycle Competence: Selection Of The Best And Most Innovative

When the megacity Moscow is now considering bicycles as means of transport, Viennese know-how is behind the master plan on which the new mindset is based. Consumer tests in the US ranked an Austrian children’s bike brand number one. Cyclists in Berlin are navigating the city with an app from Graz on their smartphones. Not only is Austria among the top 7 nations in Europe when it comes to cycling,
the cycle traffic figures are also continuously increasing. And what is more, companies from the cycling sector have achieved international kudos. This triggered the founding of the new company platform “Cycle Competence Austria” (in German: “Radkompetenz Österreich”) which celebrated ist internationael Premiere at the Velo-city conference 2015.

Among the founding members are Rosinak & Partner the masterminds behind the Moscow cycling concept; WOOM which brought the better children’s bike from Vienna onto the US market; and Bike Citizens from Graz, which translated bike courier instinct for the best route for Android and iPhone. The common aim of the 17 founding members of Cycle Competence Austria is to improve cycle traffic by innovation – not only in Austria but also in other regions which want to take the country as a best practice model.

Examples for innovative achievements by other cooperation partners can e.g. also be found in the fields of interactive maps and cycling data. The AIT Austrian Institute for Technology has used the anonymized data collected through the Radlobby initiative “Cycling to Work” to develop the CycleTripMap. On it users can see where cycle traffic is flowing through the city and which routes are preferred by cyclists. This helps communities in the planning stage.

One idea for safe cycle storage, which is also interesting for other cities in other countries, comes from the Austrian company Innovametall. The cycle garage is called “Safetydock” which includes a charging station for electronic vehicles and into which a rental feature can be integrated.

Via a stronger cooperation between the partners of Cycle Competence within the network and also on an international level it might be that in future a cycle parking system built by Ziegler Außenanlagen is mounted next to the “Wiener Pumpe” (Viennese pump) from UUBS in a city. It might also have adapted a cycling master plan developed by komobile like the recent one for Salzburg, for example to make roads more cycle-friendly aided by the engineering office Köll.

On these roads you might see the folding bike Vello which got the Red Dot Design Award 2015, or a rental e-bike from Kaloveo which offers communities and hotels a seasonal concept to ensure they are always renting out the latest models of pedelecs.

The mobility research company FGM-AMOR meanwhile has tried to find out why dedicated cycling roads (“Fahrradstraßen”) are still not widely used by communities. The result: Too many uncertainties regarding the implementation, especially with regards to the transition zones to other traffic spaces remain. More information will be made available in FGM-AMORs new edition of the brochure on how to boost cycle traffic in communities („Neue Wege zur Förderung des Radverkehrs in Gemeinden“). It will be published by the Austrian transport ministry (BMVIT) this summer.

At the Velo-city conference in Nantes also the cycling programme for migrant women initiated by the Radlobby gained international recognition. For many of these women cycling means emancipation an academic evaluation of the programme found. The Radlobby, i.e. the cycling lobby group for Austria, also had the idea to establish the Cycle Competence platform and won the “klimaaktiv mobil” initiative started by the ministry for quality of life in Austria (BMLFUW) as a partner.

Austrian and foreign communities and cities can also collect know-how e.g. from the Cycle Competence partner Herry Consult working on improving the cycle traffic infrastructure – or, on a legal level, from the law firm Pepelnik & Karl who specialized in cycle jurisdiction – and even owns a solar-powered coffee-bicycle!
