With more than 14 Mio. inhabitants Moscow is Europe’s largest city. Traffic jams on the roads and in the metro are a daily routine for Moscvites commuting into the City Center. But Moscow is a fast changing city and especially young Moscovites are taking trends up quickly. Therefore it is no surprise that riding a bicycle has become fashionable and trendy. A growth of every day cyclists can be observed in the city center who ride for transport purposes despite extremely hostile conditions. Still most of Moscow cyclists take their bikes for a ride to do sport or to simply enjoy the pleasure of cycling in the nature. The most popular places for cycling are currently the river Moskva and the big parks located outside of the center where thousands of cyclists can be observed during the warm season.
The founding member of “Cycle Competence Austria” Rosinak & Partner has developed the cycle network for the City of Moscow to be built until the year 2025. The following elements are the back bone of the future cycle network in Moscow.
- Cycle paths along the rivers
- Cycle paths on ring roads
- Important radial cycle routes
Core element of the cycle network is a “Green Cycling Ring” connecting parks and rivers. Furthermore it serves also for daily cyclists as it connects several districts of Moscow and provides access from residencial areas to public transport stations. To optimise orientation for cyclists but also to promote the Green Cycling Ring, a specific wayfinding and branding concept needs to be developed. Additionally, recreational facilities such as benches, tables and playgrounds as well as cycle service stations with air pumps and repair kit shall be established along the route to invite cyclists to take a break.
The implementation of the Moscow Bicycle Master Plan will definitely lead to a significant increase in cycling and contribute to transform Moscow into a livable and sustainable city.
