Since 2015, the platform Cycle Competence Austria aims to improve cycle traffic, to offer the best possible cycle traffic solutions made in Austria, to launch international networking activities and to transfer knowledge. From this year, we will focus even more on knowledge transfer. Our website was updated and a comprehensive online-database was included containing the most important publications on cycle traffic from the last years. Additionally, a 15-part seminar series titled “Now, this is cycle traffic” was designed and a Webtool named “Raumverteiler” (space distributor) was implemented to help re-assign Austrian street space based on well-founded facts.
New Website including a database
The Cycle Competence Austria Website was re-launched on 25 March with a new design and a search tool. As usual, you can find the current articles on cycle traffic, which can also be subscribed to via our newsletter, as well as portraits of our member companies and institutions. Apart from that, the new database was added as a centre piece. You can find it under the menu item KNOWLEDGE. The database includes more than 250 relevant publications on cycle traffic, from master plans issued by the climate protection ministry BMK or the provinces to research results and guidelines. The focus is on Austrian publications. However, important international documents are also available.
The knowledge database can be filtered according to categories, tags or members involved. Full-text search is also possible. Additionally, the search results can be sorted by year of creation or country of origin. They are available as PDFs, videos or external links. The database is updated regularly. We also welcome additional relevant documents. Please send them to email@example.com .
Webinar series titled “Now, this is cycle traffic”
The limitations the measures against the spreading of the Covid pandemic brought, were accompanied by an abrupt digitalisation of lectures and conferences. Video conferences and Webinars quickly replaced the usual meetings and conferences. This limits social interaction and informal networking but the necessity was also turned into a virtue: a number of interesting content is now available without having to travel since Zoom & Co have stepped into the breach. Cycle Competence Austria has also followed this trend and has developed a 15-part seminar series. A preview will be available on 12 and 13 April as a replacement for the cancelled Austrian cycling summit. The webinar series will be continued in May with regular lecture dates. We will keep you updated in our newsletters!
Webtool “Raumverteiler” re-designs streets
The new online-tool “Raumverteiler” (ie. space distributor) serves to re-assign Austrian street space based on well-founded facts. Where is space for a cycle lane in a road cross-section? How wide does it have to be according to legal guidelines? Where do trees, seating areas and cycle parking fit in? Or should the street be turned into an encounter zone (“Begegnungszone”)? The tool is based on the Open Source Software Streetmix from the US. It was adapted for Cycle Competence Austria by the radvokaten and Happytree IT to include current information from the guidelines and rules for the road sector (RVS) as well as the road code (StVO).
Set up a road cross-section based on a real street and re-design elements: The “Raumverteiler”
The implementation of a knowledge database, the seminar series and the “Raumverteiler” were supported by klimaaktiv mobil, an initiative by the climate protection ministry BMK.
