A tunnel solely for bicycle traffic
The high-speed bicycle connection Rankweil–Götzis/Koblach–Klaus in Vorarlberg runs from Götzis, via the industrial area in Koblach to the railway station in Klaus and further, to Rankweil. The underpass under the railway line and a new bridge over the roadway present comparatively small challenges. The biggest challenge lies in the 180m long bicycle tunnel under the Sattelberg! Cycle Competence member Rosinak & Partner, in their role in the planning process, are overseeing one of the most complex and ambitious cycle infrastructure projects in Austria.
A study has shown that the safest and most cost-effective solution to crossing the Sattelberg, motorway and rail line is a dedicated bicycle tunnel, the forecasted cost of which is €23,6 million, some of which will be state-funded. Once completed it will allow over 60.000 people to comfortably reach their workplace by bike in 15 to 20 minutes.
Bike-Priority Roads in Vorarlberg
Projects such as the new high-speed connection „Dörfer-Städte-Route“ (Village-Town-Route), opened in late August, further extend Vorarlberg’s leading role in bicycle infrastructure. The route runs exclusively on bike-priority roads in the region of Wolfurt from the Bregenzer Ach to the Senderstraße in Lustenau. Additionally, the accompanying bike lanes are a vital part of making the planned routes to Lustenau and Dornbirn accessible. The width of the new bike lanes will be between 3 and 3.5 meters and the building costs of around €350,000 will be shared between the Marktgemeinde Wolfurt and the region of Vorarlberg.
FEMtech expert of the month
The Ministry for Climate Protection (BMK) supports women in the field of research and technology with the FEMtech initiative. We are glad to congratulate Margarete Staudner, traffic planner at Cycle Competence member komobile W7, who has been chosen as the august FEMtech expert of the month! Margarete Staudner works on municipal and regional mobility concepts and dedicated solutions.
“As a passionate cyclist, it was especially interesting for me to work on the Viennese Masterplan for bike-priority streets.” She describes some of her favorite projects as having been “the cooperation between the Technical University in Graz and Luxemburg Environment Administration, measuring and modelling the pollutant particulates coming from traffic and the prognosis for long-term mobility development in Luxemburg.” More of this interview here.
