Federal Funding for Active Mobility Measures in 2023

The climate-active mobility federal funding for active mobility measures will continue in 2023 with new funding. We held a german webinar about this topic on June 5th. Here we provide an overview of the funding modules for businesses, municipalities, tourism, and individuals. Cycle Competence members Herry Consult and komobile will advise you on behalf of the Ministry of Climate Protection on all related questions.

The entire funding program is outlined in this german language guide. “Promoting active mobility is an important tool not only to achieve a sustainable improvement in the environmental situation but also to have a positive impact on health and quality of life in society as a whole. In the field of infrastructure, sustainable investments can create important foundations: Infrastructure built today lasts for many years and thus has a long-term influence on the mobility behavior of the population. Comprehensive mobility management additionally supports the transition to more climate-friendly forms of passenger and freight transport in businesses and municipalities,” states the Climate and Energy Fund in the foreword.

Funding for the Purchase of Bicycles

The acquisition of (e-)cargo bikes, (e-)folding bikes, and e-bikes (minimum of 5) by businesses, associations, and municipalities is funded on a lump-sum basis. The funding amounts to 850 euros for (e-)cargo bikes, 450 euros for (e-)folding bikes, and 250 euros for e-bikes. In addition, there is a dealer contribution of 150€ +20% VAT, which is deducted from the respective invoice amount as a funding requirement. You can find all the information here at klimaaktivmobil.at

Foldable bike models like this one from Cycle Competence member VELLO are also part of the funding measures this year. One of the funding requirements is the possession of an annual public transportation network ticket such as the Klimaticket.

Infrastructure Measures

Various measures in the field of cycling infrastructure, ranging from parking facilities for companies and, in some cases, individuals, to cycle path construction for local authorities, are eligible for funding. The level of funding depends on the specific measures involved. Eligible measures include cycling infrastructure projects such as cycle paths, bicycle priority streets, cycle superhighways, as well as pedestrian zones, shared-use zones, pavement expansions, and much more. Details can be found here.

In addition to these funding priorities, the one-time funding of up to 50% of the costs of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) or of concepts and action plans for implementing climate-neutral mobility by 2040 is possible. This offer is time-limited and initially only valid for the current application period! In the current funding period, it is also possible to achieve up to 100% federal financing by combining klimaaktiv mobil funding with funds from the 2023 Municipal Investment Act.

Comprehensive funding can be provided for cycling infrastructure programs such as the Radhighway Nord in Vienna, shown in the picture.

Mobility Management for Businesses

In addition, the klimaaktiv mobil program “Mobilitätsmanagement für Betriebe, Bauträger und Flottenbetreiber” will once again offer webinars on current topics in the field of environmentally friendly mobility, fleet conversions, and funding in 2023. Participation in the webinars is free of charge. This consultation program offers all companies in Austria free services and support for content-related questions, as well as questions regarding funding and the submission of eligible measures. In addition to active mobility, the consultation also focuses on mobility management for property developers and the 2023 e-mobility offensive.
